Next generation sequencing in environmental monitoring

Course scope
The course aims to provide and introduction to next generation sequencing technologies and their actual and potential applications in environmental studies, and particularly in environmental monitoring.
Target audience: C2 and C3 students

  • Introduction to next generation sequencing; Historical background about sequencing technologies; Emergence of NGS and impact in current and foreseen environmental applications.
  • NGS technologies (e.g.: Roche 454; Solexa/Illumina; SOLID; IonTorrent; 3rd generation sequencing (single molecule))
  • Downstream data analyses and annotation: databases, pipelines and validation.
  • Metagenomics and other meta-approaches
  • Environmental barcoding
  • Case-studies
Teaching methodologies
Lectures, theoretical-practical and laboratorial sessions. Short report of the results obtained in the bioinformatic sessions. Short review about a topic or case-studies in the scope of the course, together with an oral presentation and discussion.
