Mammalian and yeast as complementary cell models in programmed cell death – 3rd Edition

COORDINATORS Maria João Sousa, Manuela Côrte-Real
CBMA-DB, Universidade do Minho
VENUE Departamento de Biologia, Universidade do Minho
14 – 25 May

SCOPE OF THE COURSE

Besides the theoretical modules, this course includes a hands-on intensive module of lab work. In addition to brief descriptive lectures, the theoretical modules will entail case study and topic or problem–driven discussions. The hands-on lab module will illustrate different aspects of the theoretical session topics, and will include different techniques to monitor morphological, biochemical and molecular changes associates to cell death processes and autophagy namely, epifluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry. They will be followed by results interpretation, group discussion and final wrap up.

TOPICS

This course includes theoretical modules on the following topics:

  • Programmed Cell Death processes versus necrosis; apoptosis; programmed necrosis; autophagy; autophagy in physiology and pathology;
  • Mitophagy: from yeasts to mammalian cells; the central role of mitochondria in the intrinsic apoptotic pathway: mitochondrial membrane permeabilization mechanisms;
  • Utilization of yeast to study the molecular aspects of the function of Bcl-2 family members;
  • Yeast as a tool for anticancer drug research; regulation of Bax by Mammalian Protein Kinase C; the role of human oncogene KRAS in autophagy regulation: Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a model;
  • Features of cell death in neurodegenerative diseases; regulation of Programmed Cell Death in cancer and its pharmacological modulation.
